What Does the Bible Say About Christians and Astrology?
Many people today are into astrology and other ways of predicting their future. Before you start to read about, believe in, or use anything for your guidance you should always look to see what God says about it first.
So what does God say about Christians and astrology? He says quite a bit and we will go over some of the scriptures and discuss what they mean. But, before we get into the scriptures, let’s take a look at the meaning of some of the words associated with astrology.
Astrology – A type of divination where people forecast earthly and human events. They use the stars, sun, moon, and planets to do so. History shows this practice goes back to the period of Old Babylon, 2000 BC.
As you can see astrology is not anything new and people who believe in astrology will use zodiac signs to try and match them to a person’s personality.
Sorcerer – A person who claims to have magic powers, and is sometimes referred to as a wizard.
Soothsayer – A soothsayer claims to be able to foretell events to come by seeing into the future.
Divination – This is also the practice of trying to foretell the future and do so by occult or supernatural means.
Medium – A person who tries to intervene by producing the desired effect, like connecting to a person’s dead spirit.
Now that you have the meanings of all the words associated with astrology it will help you understand the scriptures better.
Daniel Chapter Two
You need to read the entire chapter to get the full meaning Daniel is teaching about the subject and you can read it here. In the second chapter of Daniel, you will see that the king had a dream and asked the astrologers to tell him what it meant. They could not do it, having to admit they didn’t have the power to do.
You see it’s easy enough for astrologers to “think” they know what going to happen, depending on how the stars “line up”. But in real life, it’s impossible to know the future unless you have been told by God what’s going to happen. This happens through prophets or God speaking to someone directly.
God’s word says “My sheep know My voice”, which means if God wants you to know something He will reveal it to you in some way.
Is Astrology Offensive To God?
For Christians, we are to believe all things come from God and that God knows all things. When we attribute what’s going on to the stars, planets, or other powers, it means we are not acknowledging that God creates and knows all things. So yes, astrology is offensive to God.
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
We don’t need anyone else to advise us, only God!
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days.
I know you have already read the entire second chapter of Daniel but I felt this part needed repeating. Only God in heaven is the one who can reveal the secrets of dreams and what’s to happen in the future!
Christians and Astrology
How Serious Is It?
Leviticus 19:26 & 31
You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying.
Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.
God’s Word is very clear that we are NOT to practice divination or soothsaying, and that we are not to seek out and use mediums or familiar spirits. If we do we are in danger of being defiled by them. God again reminds us that He is the Lord our God!
“As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritist, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.”
Wow, God’s not kidding around when it comes to things of this nature!
Christians and Astrology Conclusion
It is evident from the scriptures how God feels about astrology and everything that goes along with it. If you have been dabbling in this, I urge you to reconsider. Ask God to forgive you and start afresh, depending on Him for guidance.
God loves you and wants the best for you, so don’t turn to anything else. I understand that you may think that Tarot cards and things of this nature are simply for fun, but please, don’t do it! Christians and astrology should not mix! God Bless!
