Does being a Christian mean being a doormat?

The misconception of many people is that Christians should never stand up for themselves and this is far from the truth. The question “Does Being a Christian Mean being a Doormat” should never even come up. Many Christians are the strongest people I have ever met!

While the bible does say we are to turn the other cheek in most circumstances it doesn’t mean when we are being attacked physically. God does allow us to defend ourselves.

Scriptures To Shed Light On

Does Being A Christian Mean

Being a Doormat?

Does being a Christian mean being a doormat?

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Matthew 5: 38-42

If you were to read just this scripture you may think we should never fight back, but Jesus is talking here and His meaning is clear. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves and if we do, we won’t be thinking about revenge when someone does us wrong.

We also should give them what they need. If someone asks us to give them clothing or help with something, we should do it if we can. Jesus is teaching us to go the extra mile for people so that they can see the love of Jesus in us!

“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.

And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Bless shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.”

Deuteronomy 28: 1-5

You can stand up for yourself but God would rather you simply show love. This does NOT make you a doormat, in fact, it ensures that you will be blessed and have all you need.

As you can see above those that follow God’s commandments, like love one another, will be blessed in many ways and their food will be plentiful. There is nothing that bothers a non-Christian more than seeing you prosper and be in good health! You win, no matter what they said or did!

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

But He answered, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Matthew 4:1-4

Don’t Be A Doormat – Be A Soldier

This scripture lets us know exactly how to fight evil, even if that evil comes in the form of a neighbor or co-worker. The way to stand up for yourself is to know what the word of God says and use it.

In the scripture above Jesus uses the word to stand up for himself and God! While you may not literally quote scriptures every time to your enemies, you can use the word to move the hand of God.

God love it when we know the scriptures and confess them into being. Our words are so powerful and can dictate our reality!

We have an arsenal of weapons thanks to God. We have the Armour of God which you can study by clicking on the link below. As Christians, we should be able to stand up to anything and anyone! God is our protector and shield!

Just because the bible says to be meek, it does not mean be a weakling. Meek merely means humble!

The amour of God

This last scripture is one that I really love. It tells us that sometimes the troubles we are having with people may be because we are judging them.

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?

Hypocrite! First, get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.”

Matthew 7:1-6

When you feel you need to stand up for yourselve concerning any matter, stop and think if you are completely blameless yourself. God says we can’t teach or expect our enemies to ask godly, if we aren’t doing so! That’s pretty strong stuff!

Do You Still Think Being A Christian
Means Being a Doormat?

I think not, but being a Christian does mean we must try our best to show love in all circumstances possible.

If you feel like someone is treating you like a doormat and walking all over you I suggest you examine your own behavior first. Once you do that it’s time to pray – pray – pray!

The hand of God moves when prayer goes forth. It may be hard to pray for the person you feel is persecuting you but that’s exactly what the scriptures say we are to do.

By all means defend yourself if you are threatened physically, but for other circumstances it’s best to bring God in to help fight for you.
