The Benefits of Taking Holy Communion

For many Christians today Holy Communion is simply a ritual that churches take ever so often, but it’s much more than that.  As Christians, we need to be careful that we don’t just “go through the motions” when it comes to holy communion.

In fact, the bible states that he who drinks from the cup in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and the blood of Christ.  I’ll put in the entire scripture below.  The scripture goes on to say that for many who drink and eat in such a manner that some are weak, sickly, and even die.

“Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this  cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks body.  For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.” (death)1 Corinthians 11:27-30

Those scriptures are straight to the point and there should be no excuse for not understanding.  So what does this mean for us?  It means that before we partake of the bread and wine we should look inside ourselves and ask forgiveness for our sins.  God may even reveal to you something you didn’t even realize was a sin.  Now, before partaking, is the time to get right with God.

But, it means so much more.  The bread and the wine are what some Christians call the “Double Cure”.  The reason is the bread represents His body that was broken and whipped for our healing.  The wine represents His blood which He shed for our sins so we could come to the Father through Him.

We are forgiven because of what He so graciously did for us.  He loved us that much!  So when the bible says some have become sick or died because they took communion in an unworthy manner it means more than just reflecting on our sins.

When we take communion we need to reflect on Jesus’ broken body and what it means, as well as what the wine represents.  We do not have to stay away from partaking of communion because we think we aren’t worthy.

Take time to repent of any sins, and be thankful for what Jesus did and what the elements represent.  That is all God asks of you!  His commandment is to take communion often.

How Can You Benefit Personally From Taking Holy Communion?

  • Draws you closer to God.  When you spend time thinking about what the bread and wine symbolize it makes you love God even more and want to be close to him.
  • It’s a time for repentance.  True repentance means to turn around and go the other way so if you are asking God to forgive you for a wrong, then stay strong.
  • Time for a new beginning.  The cup represents a new covenant because of His blood sacrifice.  Start your life anew with this communion.
  • Benefits of healing.  Some people claim to have received healing when taking communion.  By Jesus stripes, we were healed according to the bible.

How Often Should You Take Holy Communion?

The scripture tells us to take the Lord’s Supper often.  The problem is that the word “often” may mean something different to your neighbor.  Most churches offer Holy Communion once every three months.  Some churches do it every week.  So what’s the correct answer?  The answer is between you and God.  The church I go to only offers it every three months.  To me, that is not often, so I take communion at home as well.

Can I Take Holy Communion at Home?

I say yes you can, but there are a few people that believe it should only be in the church setting with your church family.  I think taking it as a whole body is wonderful but like I said.  It’s just not what I call often.

You don’t have to use wine and unleavened bread to do this because it’s just the meaning of this ceremony that’s important.  I have used wine, juice, and cola for this along with a cracker or piece of bread.  To me, it’s all about reflecting on what Jesus did for me on the cross and the provisions He left for us here on earth.  It’s my time to repent and wash myself clean to start anew again.

I’m a candle lover so for me, I like to get my bread and wine ready and sit down at a table with the lights out and candles lit.  It makes this time with God seem very special and reverent.  The scriptures you should use to take communion at home are 1 Corinthians 11:24-30.

And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,  “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood.  This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.

Holy Communion is a special time where we can let Jesus know how grateful we are for what He did for us.  It’s a time of cleansing and worship all rolled up into one and it’s an honor to be able to do this unto the Lord.

In order to receive blessings and answers to prayers, it’s important to do our best to keep God’s commandments.  One way to be sure you are on the right track is to take Holy Communion every day, or at least once a month.   We are sinners by nature and by examining ourselves daily it will make it much easier for our carnal selves to die and set our spiritual selves free.

I hope this post has helped you to understand how special taking Holy Communion is.

May God bless you and keep you in the shelter of His arms.
